This type of profile portraiture was popular in Renaissance Italy. The person depicted was often a wealthy aristocrat and the centrality of the pose reflected the awarness of their important role in the universe.
I got this idea looking at one of the chapels in the Duomo in Orvieto which contained many small portraits of patrons that had commisioned the chapel's construction.
HOW THIS PORTRAIT IS DONE:
- I carefully draw your portrait onto a canvas board.
- Your portrait is painted using the "grisaille" technique (a technique executed entirely in shades of grey or of another neutral greyish colour.)
- Once dry, I apply a yellow ochre acrylic background and let dry. Afterwards the gilding glue and let dry, then eventually the faux gold leaf.
- Once the entire painting is dry, I protect it by brushing it over with natural lacquer.
Total production & drying time: 1 week.
