My idea of realism is not about photorealism or excessive detail, but rather getting the life of your beloved pet into the picture, which has little to do with detail. It’s more about the spirit of your pet; something with energy.
Getting a great likeness of your dog really matters to me, rather than just a pleasing painting.
It’s about me connecting with your much loved dog the best I can just with your photos (so the more the better).
I ALWAYS AIM FOR A HIGH QUALITY PAINTING AND DOG LIKENESS. IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE FINISHED PIECE, I WILL REFUND YOU IN TOTAL PRIOR TO SHIPPING
If I take on a commission, that means I am confident I can do a good job.
If I think photos are too poor to use, I'll say and save us both future disappointment (you=mediocre painting and me=refund your money).
I OFFER TWO STYLES (two price scales, both about enjoying the ‘gorgeousnessâ€?of oil paint!
1 FINEST STYLE (this sample) - very realistic with great attention to detail, so fur looks like fur, noses look like noses and eyes like eyes! - but very good source photos are needed for this for the best results.
This is a classically inspired style of oil painting, but takes longer to execute than the second style, as layers are built up over each other for the desired effect of depth and life.
2 FINE STYLE - not so realistic, but likeness is still just as important.
This style is more painterly, relaxed and modern, well suited to source photos that are of a more more usual quality for most people, such as taken by mobile devices.
MORE ABOUT MY STYLES AND YOUR SOURCE PHOTO QUALITY
The look of a painting depends on whether you choose FINE STYLE or FINEST STYLE.
It also depends on source photos variety and quality.
Sometimes a large 'fine style' can look similar to a small 'finest style', because it's easier to physically work with detail on the larger size.
It may almost match a 'finest' for detail but not realism when viewed for close up.
A good photo (say from a good camera) tends to have higher resolution (less likely to break up detail) and a blended range of colours (more sensitive to colour differences) to describe a given area.
A poor photo (say from a mobile) tends to have limited colours, which makes the image colours seem more 'stepped' than blended and often does this as it can't compete with the range ie sensitivity of a decent camera).
Sometimes a source photo has particularly good natural light to make the dog's colours appear natural and this can make the painting seem more realistic, so I don't have to compensate when painting for unnatural lighting effects.
Many choose the finest style despite poor photos, so I can work harder for longer extracting what I can just about see in such photos and usually more than one photo will be needed to do this.
This when plenty of experience scrutinising pets from the early 80’s comes in useful!
With poor photos, I often have to cross reference between many to get one good one in the painting.
e.g. something may be out of focus or obscured in the main source photo.
Colours are often taken from other photos to work properly as the main photo could be unnatural in colouring. I even sometimes have to image-search the net for very similar dogs to help too.
